Destinos: 4th Chicago International Latino Theater Festival
The 4th annual Destinos festival in fall 2021 programmed 10 theater companies totaling 90 performances over 4 weeks, in 7 venues throughout Chicago. Two new venues added were National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture and Teatro Tariakuri, one of a few theaters located on Chicago’s southside.
The 2021 Destinos festival was a tremendous feat, considering the festival was produced in only 3 months, after the city of Chicago officially announced venue re-openings to start September 2021. The festival featured 5 local Latino companies (Aguijon Theater, Teatro Tariakuri, Teatro Vista, UrbanTheater and Vision Latino Theater), 1 national performance (Miami) and 3 international (Dominican Republic, Mexico and Puerto Rico). In addition, CLATA partnered with Goodman Theatre on “American Mariachi”, which had nearly sold out their 850 seat house for the entire one month run. Half of the productions are presented in Spanish with English supertitles, increasing accessibility to a wider audience.
